Self Made Chicken Coop

Last two week’s big project is finally done! I made a chicken coop in the back yard and now I’m waiting for some chickens to move in! Living in a rather rural area, I took great pains in creating an as much as possible predator-proof construction.

This beautiful girl is now 15 years old!

How To: Setting Eyelets

The raised beds in the garden dearly needed some protective layer for the still cold nights here in northern germany, thus, we bought some bed liners. They’re sold by the meter, so we had to attach some eyelets for fastening them to ground with tent pegs ourselves. Here’s how:

So how do you insert a grommet into fabric, or in my case, plastic sheets? Well, common eyelet sets come with a number of eyelet parts and some special tools, they’re cheap and convenient and available in every hardware store. Left is an overview of what’s in the kit.

Learning Never Stops

Wired Patella

Wired Patella

Learning new things is a lifetime undertaking. So what have I, personally, learned in the last days?

Well, a “patella“, commonly known as kneecap, is an elaborate, delicate and enormously important component of the human body. Not only does it produce funny movements when it’s tendon is hit with a reflex hammer, it also enables you to perform some fundamental tasks, like flexing and straightening your knee (see a good demonstration here). Cool little gadget, right?

However – and I cannot stress this enough – it is NOT intended to make acquaintance with a driveway pavement at fall velocity and with the kinetic energy of around 100 kg of body weight as additional thrust. In this case, although scrupulously designed and crafted only from premium-quality materials, it will most likely just shatter.

Not funny, not pleasing, surgically challenging and certainly not a a short timer. What have you learned these days 🙂 ?

Skyrim Door

Just for the fun. Who still knows these 😀 ?

Beautiful Soldering Flame

I had to solder some zinc pipe these days for the garage gutter. I wonder what substances are contained in the tin-lead solder that the soldering iron gives off such a beautiful vibrant green flame. Does anybody know?

Recommended Reads: Bethesda Cookbooks

Who else loves Bethesda’s famous Fallout and Elder Scrolls games series? I liked them so much and I had great fun playing them for hours. So I was excited when I found out that they published two cookbooks relating directly to the games – and still took a year before finally purchasing them.

The Official Vault Dweller’s
Cookbook (Amazon)

The Elder Scrolls Official
Cookbook (Amazon)

Now that I’ve tried some of the recipes and read the books, I can recommend them warmly to everyone who likes cooking and has a soft spot for atmospheric video games, props and apparel. They’re fun, written enjoyably and very beautifully designed.
