My kitchen sink drained very slowly and not properly anymore (that’s ok after 10 years of ample use). Thanks to the vastness of the internet I came across an easy and convenient manly hint on the topic requiring only household items, so I tried that.

The summary? In my case, this did actually work 🙂 Here’s how:

Materials needed:

1 heaping tbsp. dish soap
1/2 cup baking soda (*see note)
2 cups of the cheapest vinegar you can find

Procedure:

Directly into the drain, add the dish soap, then baking soda, then the vinegar (this will result in some foaming). Cover the drain with a damp kitchen cloth (Note: kitchen paper doesn’t work). Leave this alone for 10 – 15 minutes.

Remove the cloth, pour 2 l of boiling water down the drain and wait for another 2 – 3 minutes. Rinse with some more water directly from the tap, aaand done. My sink actually drains well again.

* Note for german-language readers: Baking soda is “Natron” in german (sodium bicarbonateNatriumhydrogencarbonat), not “Backpulver” – although this might even work as well – but I didn’t test it.
